New Legislation Allows Retailers to Conduct Tastings

Due in large part to the significant efforts of NYSLSA President Tom Edwards, the NYSLSA Board of Directors and our partners at the Vandervort Group, Governor Cuomo has signed legislation (S.533-A/A.8043) to amend the Alcoholic Beverage Control Law (Section 63-a) in relation to alcohol tastings. The law previously only permitted tastings to be conducted by distillers or wholesalers. When this law takes effect, on September 14, 2015, retailers will also be permitted to conduct tastings, which will help increase sales and tax revenue at retail stores.
The enactment of the bill is significant as it was introduced, passed almost unanimously by both houses and signed all in the same year, which is extremely rare. This unprecedented feat demonstrates the great relationship that the NYSLSA leadership has cultivated with the New York State Legislature and State Liquor Authority on behalf of its members.
With a variety of legislative initiatives in the works, NYSLSA members can expect to see more exciting news in the near future.
